My 1st article in 有线快讯

Here is my 1st article in the first issue of Cable PLUS / 有线快讯 (April 15, 2011).

As the launch was originally planned for April 1, 2011 I had wrote about April Fool.  So this article comes a bit late!

April Fool! 跟你开个玩笑! Poisson d’avril!

In France people who are fooled on 1st of April are called Poisson d’avril. The tradition is said to have started in France in 1564.
When we were kids my siblings and I used to stick fish-shaped cutouts on the back of our classmates on April’s Fool Day.  If we succeeded to attach the paper fish without being noticed this person would carry it on her/his back until someone will shout out: “Poisson d’avril!”
Now when I think of it I find this rather amusing / amusant though very childish/ enfantin.

The adults also have their way of playing tricks on people and make others look foolish. They make you believe into something and wait until they cannot hide the truth anymore to tell you that this is a joke.  Today the tradition goes on not only in France but although in many countries.

We also have another custom associated with the 1st of April. Starting mid-March cake shops/ patisseries and chocolatiers are busy making and selling fish-shaped pastries and chocolate.  You can buy very small chocolate fish in pre-packed translucent paper bags, as well as large hollow chocolate fish filled with mini sugar Easter eggs /des mini oeufs de Pâques en sucre and/or small chocolate fish / petits poissons en chocolat.
I remember that my grand-father / mon grand-père used to offer a chocolate fish on the 1st of April to my brother /mon frère as his birthday falls on this interesting day. My Mum / ma Maman) told us that the day he was born nobody would believe my father that he had a son (after 2 daughters)!

Bijoux

One of my hobbies is to make accessories, specially fashion jewellery made with silver and semi-precious stones.

Crown-shape flowers

Today we went for a walk from Fo Tan to Sha Tin (strolled along the Shing Mun River) and back to Fo Tan. On our way we passed through the narrow main street of Ha (Lower) Che Wo Village along the railway line and in front of Lung Wah Restaurant famous for its roasted pigeons. My eyes were caught by a giant tree (what's its name?) full of grape-like white flowers. Each tiny white-greenish flower's 5 petals are joined at their tips and form a tiny crown. Looking through this delicate lace-like structure I can see a tiny pinkish ball (heart).
Before making our way back home we stopped at one of the dai-pai-dongs in Fo Tan Village and ordered 2 fish ball noodles and 2 fresh Qingdao beers.

Paintings

These are paintings of flats that I have done a few years ago.  Tall buildings are ubiquitous in Hong Kong.  In the oldest areas you can see laundries hanged out on bamboo pools to dry. This brings so much colours and patterns like flags floating from each window.

Sha Tin - Pai Tau Village

Pai Tau Village is located next to Sha Tin train station and adjacent to large commercial centres. Its inhabitants seem to love plants as you can see lots of flowers in pots and large bonzai trees displayed in the centre of the plaza (playgrand).
Facing the entrance (opposite the green mini-bus terminus and taxi stand) people are buying candied kumquat, ginger, and other different flavours from a booth covered with large colourful striped beach umbrellas.  Further away on the righ side is a small parking lot.
There are a few small restaurants in the village.

At week-ends and on specific days to honor the deads throngs of people walk to the nearby Po Fuk Memorial Hall and very often you can see tourists with cameras around their neck looking for signage to direct them to the Ten Thousand Buddha Monastery.

By the curb leading to the train station the Mobile Softee van is parked almost every day blaring music to attract passerbys to eat its ice-creams.
